Canva AI Pricing: What the Monthly AI Allowance Covers on Each Plan

Coding Liquids tutorial cover featuring Sagnik Bhattacharya for Canva AI Pricing: What the Monthly AI Allowance Covers on Each Plan.

Canva AI is included in every plan, but only Pro ($144 a year, one person) and Business ($250 a year per person) get a large allowance: Pro has 10x Free's AI for Premium and Ultra tools, Business 20x. Free has "limited access". Canva publishes no count of uses, and AI Pass adds more for $100 a person a month.

Older articles quote exact numbers such as "20 AI uses on Free". Canva's own pricing page no longer does, and its help pages explain why: the allowance is one pool, and a single complex task can use far more of it than a simple one. The multiples are the one hard figure, and they stack: AI Pass gives Pro 40x its allowance and Business 20x, so by Canva's own maths either plan with AI Pass lands at about 400 times Free's allowance.

What Canva's pricing page says, plan by plan

The figures below are from canva.com/pricing and the Canva Help Centre in November 2026. Prices are in dollars (USD), exclude tax, and the page's default view is yearly billing.

The page's default view is yearly billing. It also shows a "Save from 16%" note on the yearly toggle, so a monthly price exists and is higher, but I could not read a monthly figure from the page in this session. Some third-party sites quote $180 for Pro; that figure is not on the Canva page I read, so treat it as unconfirmed and switch the page to Monthly before you decide.

Three tiers of AI, and only two spend your allowance on paid plans

Canva groups its AI tools into Standard, Premium and Ultra. On a paid plan only the last two draw from the monthly allowance, which is the key to understanding what you actually get.

  • Standard AI: Image Upscaler and Magic Formulas on the help page, plus Magic Write for SEO in the pricing table. On paid plans these do not count towards the allowance (fair use limits apply). On Free, they draw from it, using the least of it. The two pages disagree on one tool: the pricing table tags "Create an image with Canva AI" as Standard, while the help page lists it as Premium, so watch the usage tracker the first time you generate an image.
  • Premium AI: Magic Layers, generating a design with Canva AI, creating an image with Canva AI, Canva Code interactives, generating elements such as shapes, charts and forms, the music and sound effect generator, and Premium tools in Affinity. These use the allowance.
  • Ultra AI: conversational design with Canva AI 2.0 and creating a video clip with Canva AI. These use the most of the allowance, and Free has no access to them.

Then there is a fourth group Canva does not meter on paid plans: tools such as Magic Resize, Translate, Magic Edit, Magic Eraser, background removal, Magic Animate and AI Voice, which appear in the pricing table as included by plan, subject to fair use, and do not count towards the shared allowance. So a paid plan covers the everyday jobs (resizing a poster to ten sizes, removing a background, translating a menu) without touching the allowance at all.

Why Canva stopped giving a number

The conflicting figures online have a simple cause. Comparison sites still print counts such as "up to 20 Standard or Premium uses a month" for Free, or older numbers again. The current page and help text speak in multiples of Free's allowance and say plainly that the ranges depend on the mix of tools, the complexity of each task and whether you use one tool type or several. Canva's help even says conversational design with Canva AI 2.0 uses more allowance than a single prompt, and a 40-slide presentation uses more than a 5-slide one.

The practical effect: any article that gives "Pro includes N image generations" is either quoting an old page or guessing. The reliable approach is to measure your own use, which the next section shows how to do.

Measuring your own allowance in one afternoon

Every account has an AI usage tracker: open the profile icon, then Settings, then Billing, and look under AI usage for your balance. Use it as a ruler.

  1. On a Free account, note the starting balance, then generate one image with Canva AI using a short prompt. Note how much the tracker dropped.
  2. Do the same with a Premium tool such as Magic Layers on a simple design, and with a longer, more complex prompt.
  3. Repeat until the tool shows a limit or a pause. The count of runs is your Free allowance for that kind of task.
  4. Multiply: Pro is 10x, Business 20x. If you managed 6 simple image generations on Free, expect something in the region of 60 on Pro and 120 on Business for the same kind of task, and fewer for complex ones.

The numbers in step four are an illustration, not a promise: Canva's own help says actual usage is "typically on the lower end" when you use advanced tools and prompts frequently. Still, a Free-account test gives you a working estimate in minutes and costs nothing. Free-trial accounts use the Free allowance, so a Pro trial will not show you the paid allowance until you start paying.

A florist's month on each plan

An illustrative florist makes weekly social graphics, a monthly price list for weddings and a few seasonal flyers. Her month includes: 12 social posts resized to three formats, 3 background removals on product photos, one flyer translated into a second language, 8 AI-generated image backdrops, 2 Canva Code interactive price guides and 1 short promotional video clip.

TaskAI tierUses the monthly allowance?

Remove 3 backgroundsIncluded toolNo on paid plans
Translate one flyerIncluded toolNo on paid plans
Eight generated image backdropsPremiumYes
Two Canva Code price guidesPremiumYes
One promotional video clipUltraYes, and the heaviest

The allowance only covers 11 of her month's jobs: the generated backdrops, the interactives and the video clip. On Free she cannot make the video clip at all, since Free has no Ultra access, and the other generation jobs draw from a limited pool. Which of the included tools (Magic Resize, Translate, background removal) Free also offers is shown by the ticks in Canva's comparison table, which I could not read as plain text, so check that table for any tool you rely on. On Pro, with 10x Free's allowance, the backdrops and interactives are comfortable and the video clip is possible. Business gains nothing for her unless she adds team members or needs its brand controls. The conclusion is that a solo florist is a Pro customer, not a Business or AI Pass customer.

Allowances are per person, not pooled

Canva's help is explicit: for Business, Enterprise, Nonprofits and Education, each member has their own allowance, and allowances are not shared or pooled across the team. That matters when you budget. A five-person Business team has five separate allowances, and a heavy user cannot borrow from a light one.

It also changes the logic of add-ons. If one of the five team members generates far more than the others, you buy that person AI Pass rather than upgrading the team. On Business, only owners and admins can purchase AI Pass, and they can assign it to an individual from the People page.

AI Pass and top-ups, with the prices I could confirm

AI Pass is a monthly add-on for web-managed Pro, Teams, Business and Nonprofits plans. Canva's help pages describe it as 40x the monthly allowance of Pro, or 20x that of Business, and give the price as USD $100 per person per month. Annual subscribers can choose monthly or annual AI Pass; the help page does not give an annual AI Pass price and says annual charges are prorated for the rest of your plan period. AI Pass is not available on Free, Education or Enterprise, during a free trial, on prepaid plans, or on subscriptions managed through the App Store or Google Play.

AI top-ups are for Business only. A top-up adds an allowance equal to your monthly Business allowance, valid for 30 days, and it adds no new features; only one can be active at a time, and a manual top-up cannot be cancelled once bought. You buy it where your plan is managed (web, or the mobile app for App Store and Google Play plans), and auto top-ups, with a spend cap you set for the billing period, work only for plans bought on the web. The help pages I read do not show a top-up price, so check it in the Billing screen before committing. Top-ups and AI Pass can be active at the same time on Business.

The yearly cost of each combination, using the published prices:

Setup (one person)Plan per yearAI Pass for 12 monthsTotal per year
Free$0Not available$0
Pro$144None$144
Pro + AI Pass, monthly billing$14412 × $100 = $1,200$1,344
Business$250None$250
Business + AI Pass, monthly billing$25012 × $100 = $1,200$1,450

AI Pass costs more than eight times the price of Pro itself. It is a tool for people who would otherwise pause mid-project, not a default upgrade. The sibling tutorial on whether AI Pass is worth it works the break-even in detail.

What actually happens when you hit the limit

Canva's help describes a soft stop for most tools. If you reach your limit you can keep using Standard and Premium AI tools, but with a short wait between generations. Ultra tools (conversational design and video clips) do not get the pause treatment: they stay unavailable until your allowance resets. For Pro and Teams you can upgrade or add AI Pass, and for Business you can buy a top-up. Canva also notifies you as you approach the limit. The allowance resets each month, on your billing date for Business, and on your subscription renewal date for other plans.

An illustrative case: a photographer's studio on Pro runs a Saturday session, generating backdrops for 30 product shots late in the month. Partway through, the allowance runs out and short pauses start between generations. Nothing is lost; the work simply slows. Had the job been a batch of video clips, an Ultra tool, it would have stopped until the reset instead. The decision is whether the delay costs more than $100 for the month. For a one-off Saturday it almost never does, so the answer is to wait or spread the batch across the reset.

A mistake that cost one owner a month of AI

An illustrative mistake: an owner starts a Pro free trial to test video clips, sees the Ultra tools greyed out and concludes Canva's video AI is not worth buying. Canva's help says the trial allowance matches Free, so the Ultra tools are not available until the paid plan starts. The owner wasted a trial period judging a feature that was never on offer. The fix is to check the allowance table before trialling, and start the paid plan for a month if a specific tool is the reason you are buying.

Cutting how fast the allowance drains

Canva's help pages list what raises usage: larger referenced designs, more complex tasks, more tools in one request and more advanced models. Those four levers are also your controls. A filled-in before and after for an illustrative driving school's offer poster:

Heavy approach: open the 40-slide termly brochure, ask Canva AI 2.0 to "redesign everything in a friendlier style, add photos and a video intro, and resize for four formats". That mixes Ultra tools, a large referenced design and several actions in one request.

Light approach: duplicate the one poster page, ask for a single colour change and a new background image, then use the included Magic Resize for the four formats. The generation still uses the allowance, but the resize does not, and the referenced design is one page rather than forty.

A sample prompt for the light approach:

On this page only: replace the background with a soft green
gradient and add a small steering-wheel icon above the headline.
Keep all text, fonts and positions the same.

Expect a result that changes the background and adds the icon but may nudge spacing, so scan the text for shifted alignment before saving. That narrow request is cheaper in allowance than "redesign the whole thing" and gives you less to correct.

A three-person team where one person uses most of the AI

An illustrative three-person photography studio is on Business at $250 a year each: $750. One partner produces most of the marketing visuals and keeps running into pauses in the second half of each month. The other two barely touch the AI tools.

  • Buy AI Pass for the heavy user only, monthly: $750 + (12 × $100) = $1,950 a year.
  • Buy AI Pass for all three: $750 + (3 × 12 × $100) = $4,350 a year, which is $2,400 more for two people who do not need it.
  • Buy AI Pass only in busy months: since AI Pass is a monthly add-on that can be removed (it stays active to the end of the billing cycle), six months of it costs $600, bringing the total to $1,350.
  • Use a Business top-up in a busy week: price shown at purchase in the Billing screen; it gives a block equal to the monthly allowance for 30 days with no commitment.

The cheapest sensible choice is usually the top-up or a seasonal AI Pass, not a year-round one. The check is simple: in the Billing screen, read the AI usage panel in the last week of each month and see who is near the limit.

A monthly review habit that takes five minutes

Put a recurring reminder in your calendar for the day before your billing date, and ask three questions:

  1. Did anyone hit a pause this month? If not, the plan is large enough.
  2. Which tool used the most? If it was a video clip or conversational design, those are the Ultra tools, so ask whether the output justified it.
  3. Would a cheaper plan have done the same jobs? A Business seat used only for resizes and translations could be a Pro seat for one person, saving $106 a year.

The saving in the last item comes from $250 minus $144. Remember, though, that Pro is for one person only, so a team needing shared brand kits and approvals cannot move to it.

Education and nonprofit plans change the picture

Canva's help lists Education at 10x Free's AI allowance and Nonprofits at 10x with AI Pass available to nonprofit plans. If you teach or run a registered charity you may not need to pay for Pro or Business at all. The pricing page says nonprofits can get a free subscription with all the premium features of Canva Pro, plus team and collaboration tools, for one team of up to 50 users, with additional seats at 50% off Enterprise. Check eligibility with Canva before you pay anything. For tutors and nurseries, Canva for Education against Pro covers who qualifies.

Choosing a plan from what you make

Use this as a checklist, filled in for an illustrative driving school that makes lesson-offer posts and a termly price sheet:

  1. How many people design? One person: Pro is for one person only, so a school with two designers needs Business, which is $250 a year each.
  2. Which tools do they use? Resize, translate and background removal need no allowance on paid plans. If those are the main jobs, Pro is plenty.
  3. Do they need video clips or conversational design? Those are Ultra tools, only on paid plans, and use the most allowance.
  4. Is anyone hitting pauses? Look at AI usage in Billing before spending $100 on AI Pass.
  5. What else does Business give them? 100 brand kits, approvals, 500 GB storage and team admin tools. Pay for those, not for the AI alone.

For the full yearly sums at team sizes of one, five and ten, see Canva cost per year on Pro and Business. For which tasks need which plan, is Canva AI worth it on Free, Pro or Business goes job by job. And before you pay for anything, the free marketing software limits tutorial shows how Canva's free tier compares with other tools you may already have.

Canva AI allowance: the questions that come up

How many AI uses does Canva Pro include each month?

Canva no longer publishes a count. Its pricing and help pages describe Pro as 10x more AI allowance than Free for Premium and Ultra tools, with Standard AI tools available without using the allowance. Free's own allowance is described only as limited, so the true number varies with the tools and tasks you choose.

What happens when I use up my allowance?

Canva's help pages say you can keep using Standard and Premium AI tools with short pauses between generations rather than being locked out. Ultra tools are the exception: they are unavailable until the allowance resets. Canva notifies you as you approach the limit, and Business subscribers can add a top-up to avoid the pauses.

Is Canva's AI allowance shared across my team?

No. For Business, Enterprise, Nonprofits and Education, Canva's help says each member has their own allowance, and allowances are not shared or pooled across the team or organisation.

Does a free trial of Pro give me the full allowance?

No. Canva's help gives a Pro or Business trial the same limited access as Free: some Standard and Premium AI, no Ultra AI and no Premium AI in Affinity. The full allowance starts when your paid plan begins, and AI Pass cannot be bought during a free trial.

Can I buy AI Pass on the Canva mobile app?

No. Canva says AI Pass cannot be purchased from the iOS or Android app and must be bought in a browser at canva.com, by a team owner or admin on team plans. Plans managed through the App Store or Google Play must be moved to a web subscription first.
