Wix is worth it for a small business that needs a simple brochure or booking site built quickly and will stay on Wix. Paid plans run about $17 to $159 a month on yearly billing. Choose another builder if you may change hosts later, because a Wix site cannot be moved, or if you will run a large shop.
Most pages on this question compare features. The decision is easier with a rule: what is the site for, how long will you keep it and who will edit it? A ten-page brochure for a cleaning company, kept for five years and edited by the owner, suits Wix Light at $17 a month; a 300-page content site that may change platforms does not suit Wix at any price.
The four paid plans and what they include
Wix's plans page says prices and currency vary by location, so it can show a local, tax-inclusive figure. Wix's own guide to its premium plans, current as of November 2026, gives these USD prices per month on yearly billing, before tax:
| Plan | About per month (yearly) | Storage | Collaborators | Takes payments | Scheduling |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Light | $17 | 2 GB | 2 | Not listed | Not listed |
| Core | $29 | 50 GB | 5 | Yes, basic online shop | Yes |
| Business | $39 | 100 GB | 10 | Yes, standard online shop | Yes |
| Business Elite | $159 | Unlimited | 100 | Yes, advanced online shop | Yes |
All paid plans include a free domain for a year, and Wix offers a 14-day money-back guarantee that its FAQ says applies to the first upgrade to a premium plan. There is also a free plan with no card needed. The page does not state transaction fees, bandwidth limits or whether adverts appear on the free plan, so check those at checkout.
Two cost points that rarely appear in comparison articles: any discount shown at checkout may apply only to the first term, and Wix's FAQ says the free domain voucher is not included when you renew or upgrade a plan. Always read the renewal price on the checkout screen, not the headline.

Buy nowMain worked example: a six-person plumbing firm choosing a plan
Say a plumbing firm wants a website with its services, areas covered in general terms, a gallery of finished work, reviews, an enquiry form and a way to book a boiler service. Three people will edit it: the owner, the office manager and a freelance bookkeeper who only updates prices.
| Need | Smallest plan that covers it | Reason |
|---|---|---|
| Service pages and enquiry form | Light ($17) | Brochure site with a form; 2 GB is ample for text and compressed photos |
| Online booking of boiler services | Core ($29) | Scheduling is listed from Core upwards |
| Three editors | Core ($29) | Light allows 2 collaborators; Core allows 5 |
| Deposit payments | Core ($29) | Accepting payments is listed from Core upwards |
The firm needs Core. Over a year at list that is 12 x $29 = $348, against Light's $204. The $144 difference buys scheduling, payments and three editors. A firm that only wanted the brochure pages and a form, with one editor, would be fine on Light. The plan is chosen by features, not size.
What the AI builder does and does not do
Wix's AI website builder takes a description of your business in your own words and generates a draft: pages, layout and starter wording. Wix's help centre also describes Wix Smart Chat, the new name for what was called AI Site Chat, which answers visitor questions. It now draws on the AI credits included in your site plan instead of a separate subscription, so check your plan's AI credit allowance before you rely on chat to answer customers. For what the builder includes at each tier, see Wix AI builder pricing.
The draft is a start, not a finished site. Expect to rewrite the headline on each page, replace stock sentences with your actual services and prices, and check that nothing claims something untrue, such as a certification you do not hold or a service area you do not cover. A good habit is to read every sentence aloud and delete any you would not say to a customer. A plumber's site built and checked shows what needed fixing in practice.
The catch most reviews skip: you cannot move a Wix site
Wix's pages are served from Wix's platform, and a Wix site cannot be moved to another host. If you leave, you take your text, images and domain, and rebuild the design elsewhere. That is not a reason to avoid Wix, but it changes how you should choose.
It is acceptable if your site is a small brochure that you would happily rebuild in a weekend. It is risky if you have hundreds of pages and search rankings built on them, because rebuilding means re-creating every address and redirecting the old ones. Before you start, do three things: register your domain in your own name, keep your photos and text in a folder outside Wix, and write down every page address so you can redirect them in future. If you are the kind of owner who switches tools every two years, pick a builder with an exportable format instead.
Brochure, booking or shop: which Wix plan, or another builder
- Brochure site of five to fifteen pages, edited by one or two people, kept for years: Wix Light is a good fit. A rival builder with stronger templates may suit a design-led business better.
- Booking site where customers pick a slot: Wix Core or above, because scheduling starts there. Compare against a dedicated booking tool if you need deposits, staff calendars and reminders in one place.
- Shop with under 50 products: Core or Business works. Beyond that, or if you need complex shipping, stock sync across sellers or many variants, use a dedicated shop platform.
- Content site with hundreds of pages: avoid Wix. A builder whose content can be exported keeps your options open.
- Anything needing custom software, a member area or a bespoke workflow: consider a different route, such as the one in Lovable vs Wix.
A cleaning company that wants quotes, not bookings
A cleaning company wants customers to ask for a quote: size of home, number of bathrooms, frequency. Nothing is paid on the site. The right plan is Light, with a well-designed form whose fields match the questions you currently ask on the phone. The sum is simple: $17 a month, a form that sends an email and a spreadsheet row, and a reply within a working day. Buying Core for scheduling it does not use would waste $144 a year. If the company later adds recurring-clean booking, upgrading is a click, because plans can be changed.
A pest-control firm with a seasonal rush
A pest-control firm gets most enquiries in summer, and many come from a phone in a customer's garden. For that firm the priorities are speed on mobile, a clear phone number at the top and a form with three fields. The firm should check the published page on a mobile and a slow connection, not just in the editor. Wix's gallery and animation features can slow a page; strip anything decorative from the top screen. If pages feel slow after trimming, that is a signal to test a lighter builder rather than add more plugins.
A roofing company and the photo problem
A roofing company lives on before-and-after photos. Light's 2 GB sounds small, but a hundred compressed photos at 300 KB each is about 30 MB, so storage is rarely the limit; large unprocessed phone photos are. Resize images to about 1,600 pixels wide before uploading and keep each under 400 KB. The sum: 300 photos x 400 KB = 120 MB, well within 2 GB. Video is the exception; host long videos on a video platform and embed them.
Three-year cost, with the renewal trap included
First-year prices flatter every builder, so compare three years. These sums use Wix's list prices on yearly billing and deliberately assume no introductory discount, since any discount may cover only the first term. Domain renewal is a separate cost that depends on the registrar, so add your own figure.
| Plan | Three-year plan cost at list | What you would add |
|---|---|---|
| Light | 36 x $17 = $612 | Domain renewals from year two |
| Core | 36 x $29 = $1,044 | Domain renewals; payment-provider fees on sales |
| Business | 36 x $39 = $1,404 | As above |
| Business Elite | 36 x $159 = $5,724 | As above |
Compare Core's $1,044 across three years with a one-off agency build. For a six-person plumbing firm, if a freelancer charges a few hundred dollars for a template build and the firm pays a separate hosting fee, the gap may be smaller than it looks, but the freelancer's site is portable and the Wix site is not. Get two written quotes before you assume the monthly price is the cheaper route.
Before and after: the AI draft against the version you publish
An AI-generated first draft tends to be fluent and vague. Here is an illustrative homepage headline and intro for a pest-control firm, as generated and as edited:
Generated: Welcome to our company, where quality meets reliability. We provide
top-notch pest solutions tailored to your needs.
Edited: Wasps, rats and ants dealt with, with a written plan and a fixed price
before we start. Call [number] or send a message and we reply by the next
working morning.
The edit names real pests, a real promise and a real next step. Notice also what was removed: "top-notch", "tailored" and "quality meets reliability" mean nothing to a customer. Apply the same pass to every page: swap each general claim for a fact the owner can stand behind, and delete the claim if there is no fact. That hour of editing is what separates a Wix site that brings enquiries from one that merely exists.
What a rebuild costs if you ever leave
Because the site cannot be moved, plan for the cost of leaving even if you never leave. For a brochure site of ten pages, an honest estimate has three parts: copying the text and images into the new builder (about 30 minutes a page, so five hours), recreating the layout and form (three to six hours), and setting up redirects for every old address (one to two hours). That is roughly 9 to 13 hours, which at a freelancer's day rate may cost more than three years of Light. For a 100-page site the number is ten times larger, and the search traffic at risk is the real cost. This is the practical meaning of "locked in": it is a cost you can price today.
A scoring sheet for choosing between builders
Score each builder you are weighing from 0 to 3 on the criteria below, using a trial for each rather than its marketing. A filled-in example for a cleaning company choosing between two builders:
| Criterion | Weight | Builder A | Builder B |
|---|---|---|---|
| Time to publish three pages | x3 | 3 (90 min) | 2 (150 min) |
| Time to change a price | x3 | 3 (2 min) | 3 (3 min) |
| Quote-request form that fits our questions | x2 | 2 | 3 |
| Can move the site later | x2 | 0 | 3 |
| Three-year cost at list | x1 | 3 | 2 |
| Weighted total | 9+9+4+0+3 = 25 | 6+9+6+6+2 = 29 |
Here the faster builder loses because of one criterion, the ability to move later. If you value speed and rarely switch, set that weight to 0 and the answer flips. The point of the sheet is to make your own weights visible, not to pick for you.
A small shop on Wix: the sum to run first
Say a cleaning company also sells branded microfibre cloths and spray bottles, around 20 products. Wix's Core plan lists basic online shop features and accepting payments. Before you commit, run this sum: orders a month x average order value x the payment processor's percentage and fixed fee, plus the monthly plan. The processor's fee schedule is on its own page and varies, so fetch the current one. If the shop earns less in margin than the plan costs, the shop is a hobby, and a link to a payment page may serve better than a store. If it earns three times the plan, keep it and review at Business when the 50 GB of Core storage or five collaborators becomes the limit.
A mistake that surfaces in month eight
The scenario here is invented to show a pattern. A small firm builds its site on the free plan, publishes it on a Wix-owned address and prints the address on vans. Months later it upgrades and connects a custom domain, and the printed address now points to the old one. Searchers find two versions of the same site.
The fix is to decide the domain before any printing, buy it in your own name, and set the paid-plan connection up before launch. Also set a note in your diary for the renewal date of both plan and domain, since a lapsed plan can take the site offline.
Settings worth checking in the first week
Three Wix settings pay for themselves in minutes. First, add the form notification email addresses for every person who should see enquiries, and send yourself a test, because a form that emails an old address is the commonest silent failure. Second, set the page title and description for the home page and each service page by hand, in plain words customers would search, rather than accepting the generated ones. Third, connect your own domain before you share the address anywhere, then open the site in a private browser window to confirm that the old Wix address redirects to it. Fifteen minutes on these three things heads off three of the commonest problems with a new site.
A pre-launch check you can copy
Every page:
[ ] Headline says what we do and for whom
[ ] Phone number and form work on a phone
[ ] No claims we cannot prove (certifications, response times)
[ ] Prices or "from" prices match the van and the quote template
[ ] Page title and description written by a human
Site-wide:
[ ] Own domain connected and renewal date in the diary
[ ] Text and photos saved outside Wix
[ ] Cookie notice and privacy page present where needed
[ ] Test form submission arrives in the right inbox
It takes about 30 minutes and catches the faults that cost enquiries. Ask a friend to try to book or call from the site on their own phone while you watch; whatever they hesitate over is your next edit.
When another builder is the better buy
- You want to own your site files and move freely: pick a platform where exports and host changes are possible, since a Wix site cannot be moved.
- Design is your product (a photographer, a studio): compare templates on a rival such as Squarespace, whose free trial and cheapest start are worth reading first.
- You sell many products: use a shop platform, with Wix as at most the brochure beside it.
- You need many editors with different permissions: check collaborator limits (2, 5, 10, 100) against your team.
- You want a fast start with AI: compare Wix's builder against Squarespace's Blueprint AI and judge the first draft each produces from the same three answers.
An afternoon test before you pay
Build the same three-page draft on Wix's free plan and one rival's trial, using the same text. Time each, publish both to a phone and note which you could update fastest next month. Then compare renewal prices, not first-year prices. The builder that feels easier in week one is not always the one you will tolerate in month twelve; the question that matters is how long it takes to change a price or add a service in the middle of a busy week. Do the change in each builder and write down the minutes.
If you would rather decide this with someone who has looked at what your site needs to do, that is what my AI implementation consultation covers; you can ask at /contact. To see what the same decision looks like for a trades business, read which Wix plan a small trades firm needs.
Wix questions to settle before you build
Can I move my Wix site to another host?
No. A Wix site cannot be exported and hosted elsewhere in its built form; the pages live on Wix's platform. You can copy your text and images by hand into another builder, but the design and structure are rebuilt. Decide on this basis before investing months in a site.
How much does Wix cost a month?
On yearly billing the plans are roughly $17 (Light), $29 (Core), $39 (Business) and $159 (Business Elite) a month, before tax. Wix's plans page shows local prices that can include tax, and any introductory discount may apply only to the first term. Confirm the price shown at checkout, including the renewal price.
Is the Wix free plan useful for a business?
It is useful for testing the editor and designing a draft with no card needed. It is not suitable as a business site, because to connect your own domain and accept payments you need a paid plan. Build the draft free, then upgrade only when the content is ready.
Does Wix's AI builder make a finished website?
It makes a first draft: pages, layout and starter text from your description of the business. You still need to correct facts, replace stock wording with your own services and prices, and check it on a phone. Expect an hour or two of editing for a simple brochure site, not zero.
