Etsy's AI Title Suggestions: Should You Accept Them?

Accept a suggestion only when it keeps the phrase buyers actually use to find that listing, states the item and its key details correctly, and keeps whatever makes your item different. Etsy says the tool is optional and that keeping your current title won't automatically hurt your visibility, so edit or dismiss freely.

The reason for caution is how the tool works. Etsy's optional title suggestions, rolled out from August 2025, use your current title, your first photo and your description. They do not look at your past sales or search performance. A suggestion can therefore read better and still drop the very phrase that brings in your orders. Each suggestion needs checking against your own search data, and the four-question test below is built for that, followed by worked verdicts and a way to trial them before touching a whole shop.

What the tool looks at, and what it ignores

The suggestion is based onThe suggestion ignores
Your current titleThe search terms that bring you visits (in Etsy Stats)
Your first photoWhich listings sell, and how well
Your descriptionReviews and what buyers say about the item
Etsy's current title guidanceAnything true about the item that isn't in those three

That guidance, published at the same time, asks for titles that clearly state what the item is, put the most important traits (colour, material, size) up front, avoid repeated words, move subjective words such as "beautiful" to the description, and use fewer than 15 words. The suggestions follow it well. Where they go wrong is on facts the tool can only infer from a photo, and on search phrases it cannot see.

Why shorter titles are where Etsy is heading

If the suggestions feel short, that is deliberate, and it is worth understanding before you resist it. Three things push the same way:

  • Phones. A large share of Etsy browsing happens in the app, where only the first few words of a title show before it is cut off. Sellers also reported in 2025 that the buyer app sometimes displays a shortened version of titles. Whatever sits after the first 40 or so characters is rarely read.
  • Tags and attributes do the matching. Etsy's guidance says categories and attributes act like tags. The phrases that used to be crammed into titles belong there now, where they help search without making the title unreadable.
  • Conversational search. Shoppers increasingly describe what they want in full sentences, including through Etsy's app inside ChatGPT, launched in beta in May 2026. A clear title that names the item plainly matches those requests better than a list of keywords.

So the question is rarely "short or long?". It is whether the short version the tool proposes keeps the right words.

A four-question test for each suggestion

Open your Etsy Stats search analytics in another tab first, so you can see the search terms each listing gets visits from. Then, for each suggestion:

QuestionIf yesIf no
1. Does it keep the listing's top search term from Etsy Stats?ContinueEdit the phrase back in, or dismiss
2. Is every word true: material, size, quantity, finish?ContinueEdit; never accept a wrong fact
3. Does it keep what makes your item different (personalised, handmade, a size others don't offer)?ContinueEdit it back in
4. Would a buyer scanning on a phone understand it faster than your current title?AcceptKeep your title

Question 1 is quicker than it sounds. In Etsy Stats, open the listing and look at the search terms that brought visits. For the pressed-flower frame used below, an illustrative 30 days read:

Search term Visits Orders
pressed flower frame 41 3
real flower art 12 1
wildflower gift 7 0
botanical frame 5 0
oak frame flowers 3 0

The top line is the one the new title must keep. "Real flower art" is worth keeping too, since it produced an order; the rest can live in tags.

Expect many suggestions to need an edit rather than a straight accept or dismiss: the structure is often clearer than a keyword-chain title, while one word needs putting back or correcting.

Three suggestions, three verdicts

These examples are illustrative, drawn from the kind of listings an independent bookshop and a florist might sell on Etsy.

Accept: a literary quote print

Current: Literary Quote Print, Book Quote Wall Art, Reading Nook
Decor, Book Lover Gift, Library Print, Bookish Poster A4
Suggested: A4 Literary Quote Print, Typography Wall Art for a
           Reading Nook

The shop's Etsy Stats show most visits come from "literary quote print" and "reading nook decor". The suggestion keeps the first exactly and the second in spirit, says A4, and removes the repetition. The other phrases can move to tags. Accept.

Edit: a pressed-flower frame

Current: Pressed Flower Frame, Real Pressed Wildflowers, Botanical
Art, Oak Frame 8x10, Wedding Gift, Anniversary Gift
Suggested: Dried Flower Wall Art in Oak Frame, 8x10 Botanical Print

Two problems, both from the tool reading the photo. "Dried flower" is not the same as "pressed flower" to a buyer, and "pressed flower frame" is this listing's top search term. "Botanical print" suggests a printed image, when the flowers are real. Edited version: "Pressed Flower Frame, Real Wildflowers in Oak, 8x10 Botanical Art". Keep the structure, fix the facts.

Dismiss: personalised bookplates

Current: Personalised Bookplate Stickers, Set of 24, From the
           Library Of, Name Labels
Suggested: Bookplate Stickers, Set of 24 Cream Book Labels

The suggestion removed "Personalised" and "From the library of", the two things that make the item worth buying and the two phrases in its top search terms. It added "Cream", which is already an attribute. The current title already follows Etsy's guidance. Dismiss.

Edit again: a candle the photo made look bigger

Current: Fig and Cedar Soy Candle, 180g Amber Jar, Vegan Candle,
           Housewarming Gift, Woody Scented Candle
Suggested: Large Amber Jar Candle, Fig and Cedar Scent

This one came from a candle maker's shop, and it shows the photo problem from a different angle. The product shot is a close-up, so the tool read the jar as "large", when 180 g is a small candle. It also dropped "soy", the listing's top search term, and the word buyers use to filter out paraffin. Edited version: "Fig and Cedar Soy Candle, 180g Amber Jar, Woody Scent". A buyer who receives a small candle after reading "large" leaves the review that costs more than any title gains.

It depends on the listing: when to be cautious and when not to bother

  • Listings with steady sales (say, several orders a month from search): be conservative. Accept only if all four answers are yes, and change one or two listings at a time so you can see the effect.
  • Listings with views but no sales: the title is rarely the main problem, so check the price and first photo first. A clearer title can still help.
  • Listings with almost no views: little to lose. A good suggestion is a quick improvement; accept after the fact check.
  • Personalised or custom items: check for dropped personalisation words every time, as in the bookplate example.
  • Items where material is the selling point (solid silver, linen, real flowers): check the material word the tool chose from the photo.
  • Listings with variations: if one listing sells a frame in 5x7, 8x10 and A4, a suggestion built from the photo may name only the size pictured. "8x10" in the title of a three-size listing tells buyers searching for A4 that it isn't for them. Name the size most people buy, or write "in 3 Sizes", and let the variation menu do the rest.

Where the words a suggestion drops should go

A shorter title leaves phrases homeless, and some of them earned visits. Before accepting, check whether each dropped phrase already exists as a tag or attribute. On the quote print, the suggestion dropped "book lover gift", "library print" and "bookish poster". The listing's tags already held "book lover gift"; "library print" replaced a weak tag ("wall decor", which says nothing about the item); and "bookish poster" was left out, since it had brought no visits in 90 days. If all 13 tags are already doing useful work, that is a hint the old title was not carrying much extra weight anyway.

How to trial suggestions before changing the whole shop

  1. Record a baseline. Copy each listing's current title, and its last 30 days of impressions, visits and orders from Etsy Stats, into a spreadsheet. One row per listing is enough, for example: "Quote print A4 | old title pasted in full | suggestion pasted in full | verdict: accept | top term: literary quote print | 1,240 impressions, 44 visits, 2 orders | changed 3 Oct". The date column is the one people forget, and without it you can't line the change up against Etsy Stats later.
  2. Pick ten comparable listings that have suggestions. Accept or edit the suggestion on five; leave five alone.
  3. Wait 30 days. Do not change prices, photos or tags on those ten in the meantime.
  4. Compare the two groups, not before and after alone. If both groups rose, it was probably the season.

A filled-in comparison from an illustrative trial:

GroupImpressions, 30 days before / afterVisits before / afterOrders before / after
5 listings, suggestions accepted or edited6,200 / 7,400210 / 2659 / 12
5 listings, unchanged5,900 / 6,500198 / 2148 / 9

Work out the change as a percentage for each group, because the groups started from different levels. Impressions rose about 19% for the changed listings (6,200 to 7,400) against about 10% for the unchanged ones (5,900 to 6,500); visits rose about 26% (210 to 265) against 8% (198 to 214). Roughly half of the changed group's impressions gain also happened to the unchanged group, so that part was probably the season or a change in Etsy search, not the titles.

The changed group rose more than the unchanged one, which suggests the new titles helped, but twelve orders against nine is too small to be sure. The reasonable next step is to extend the edits to the next ten listings and keep watching, not to bulk-accept everything.

Bulk accepting: when it is reasonable

The tool lets you update many listings at once, and for a shop with hundreds of listings that is tempting. It is reasonable for listings with no orders in the last 90 days, once you have read every suggestion for fact errors, and after keeping a record of the old titles. It is not reasonable for your bestsellers. Here is the realistic mistake, as an illustration: say a seller bulk-accepts 60 suggestions in one evening, and the following month two of her three best sellers have lost the phrase that brought most of their search visits. With no record of the old titles, she has to rebuild them from memory. Copying titles into a spreadsheet first would have taken ten minutes.

When you dismiss one, write the replacement yourself

If a suggestion fails the test but your current title is a long keyword chain, rewrite it using the same guidance: the item first, the most important trait next, your top search term included, fewer than 15 words, and every word true. An AI assistant can help if you give it your Etsy Stats search terms and the facts of the item. For a wreath whose suggestion the florist dismissed, the request was: "Rewrite this Etsy title in under 15 words. Keep the exact phrase 'dried flower wreath'. Facts: 35 cm, pampas grass and dried eucalyptus, on a rattan ring. Current title: [pasted]." An illustrative reply: "Boho Dried Flower Wreath, 35cm Pampas and Eucalyptus Door Wreath, Stunning Rattan Decor". The structure is right, but "Stunning" is exactly the subjective word Etsy's guidance moves to the description, and "Wreath" now appears twice. Final version: "Dried Flower Wreath, 35cm Pampas and Eucalyptus on Rattan, Boho Door Decor". The full method, including tags and descriptions, is in how to use AI for Etsy titles, tags and descriptions. If you are worried that AI-written titles themselves count against you, see whether writing Etsy listings with AI hurts ranking.

Worked example: a florist's shop with 42 listings

A fictional but typical case: a florist sells pressed-flower frames, dried bunches and wreaths through 42 Etsy listings, and the Search Visibility dashboard offers suggestions on 30 of them. She spends an evening on the four-question test:

  • 12 accepted, mostly old keyword-chain titles on listings with few views.
  • 13 edited, nine of them because the tool wrote "dried" where the item is pressed, or dropped the frame size.
  • 5 dismissed, all on her best sellers, where the suggestion removed the top search term.

The whole job takes about two and a half hours, including recording old titles. A month later, the accepted and edited listings show more impressions on average, the dismissed best sellers are unchanged, and the only listing that did worse was one where she had accepted "botanical print" on a real-flower frame, which brought visits from people looking for prints. It showed up in Etsy Stats rather than in sales: visits to that listing rose from 30 to 52, orders fell from 2 to 0, and the new search terms were "botanical print poster" and "botanical wall print", neither of which describes a frame of real flowers. More visits with fewer orders is the signature of a title attracting the wrong searches. She changed it back. The pattern held that the structure of Etsy's suggestions was usually an improvement, and the facts needed a human.

Accept, edit or dismiss: the whole test in one line

Accept suggestions that are true, keep your top search term and read faster on a phone; edit the ones that get a fact or a key phrase wrong; dismiss them on your best sellers unless all four answers are yes. Etsy title suggestions: the follow-up questions

Will ignoring Etsy's title suggestions hurt my ranking?

Etsy has said that updating titles is optional and that keeping your current title will not automatically hurt your visibility. It has also said that seeing a suggestion does not mean your title is underperforming. Search ranking depends on many things beyond the title, including how buyers respond to your listing, so a good existing title is safe to keep.

Why can't I see the title tool in my shop?

Etsy rolled it out gradually from August 2025, and it only appears when suggestions exist for eligible listings, which Etsy describes as listings written in English. When available, it sits in the Search Visibility dashboard on Etsy.com and in the Etsy Seller app. If your listings are in another language, the tool will not offer suggestions for them.

Is the title buyers see in the Etsy app always the title I wrote?

Not always. Sellers reported in 2025 that Etsy's buyer app sometimes displays a shortened version of listing titles, and only the first few words show on a phone anyway. That is separate from the suggestion tool. It is one more reason to put the item and its most important detail in the first 40 or so characters.
